Demystifying the Jinx of the "Starving Artist"

Often times I have heard the phrase “The Starving Artist” and I kept on wondering what should be an Artist’s true status- financially, socially and more importantly, technologically since art and technology are deeply interwoven.
Art is an ostentatious profession but poses the irony of “Starving Artists”. Over the years, history has acquitted us with the economical status of most world-renowned artists. Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael to mention a few, were not necessarily “rich” though their works were prized by Dukes, Princesses and Kings. Does it then mean that artists mismanage the incomes of these “ostentatious” objects? Another important fact or mystery behind art is that artworks appreciate in monetary value especially when the artist who produced them is long dead and gone!
Higher percentage our modern day Artists have tried demystifying this jinx of a “Starving Artist” by embracing the innovative dictates of our global village- Technology! This brings me to the lamentations of an Artist friend who kicks against deserting what I would refer to as “Studio Culture” to vain frivolities. His classmates then in the high school who were really promising in either painting or sculpture suddenly abandoned this first love and opted for Graphics and Multi-media Designing. This latter option is an Applied Art and more commercial in nature. This has shown the artist’s quest for survival in a world of relatively low Fine Art patronage. Art collectors go for the popular names that have made a mark in the creative sands, leaving behind the up-coming Artists, I wonder to the mercies of whom?
The survival instinct of the modern day Artist has risen greatly. He no longer wants to be seen as an individual who has cut himself away from the world, leading a solitary life in his studio, many times does not wear fine apparel or nice perfumes, but has sold his life entirely to his creative works alone. He presently longs to be an influential part of his society who speaks not through art alone, but in social, financial and technological spheres.

Leonardo Da Vinci was a creative genius whose works cut through Medicine, Engineering, Architecture and Art. His findings and theories of the human anatomy left an indelible mark in Art and Medicine even up till today!

The inventions of the war tank, exquisite architectural designs, bridges, dams and airplane were his brain child in illustrations and theories he propounded centuries ago! He was a versatile Artist. I strongly believe he would have been in the fore-front of technology today if he were to be in this generation since the world has gone technology-wise. The issues of fusing art and technology and most importantly, using technology to solve many artistic problems would have been his major task and concern.

Graphics for instance falls into this cadre. Long before now, artists had to manually execute projects. This was time-consuming and energy-sapping but technology has made things easier today. With a click of the Computer mouse, prototype designs are made thereby increasing efficiency by 70% or more! Architects for instance now design houses with the “AUTO-CAD” software instead of manual drawing and measuring.
In this light I would say my Artist friend was scared of change and has his creative capabilities limited only to his studio walls. He must have also misunderstood Leonardo Da Vinci’s charge to the Painter or rather the Artist-

“O Painter, take care lest the greed for gain prove a stronger incentive than renown in Art, for to gain this renown is a far greater thing than is the renown for riches”

The upsurge into Technology by modern day Artists should not be seen as “greed for gain” but to occupy their rightful positions in every sphere of Creative Design or should we leave them for the Politicians? This has also asserted a strong affirmation- “A versatile Artist can never be a Starving Artist!”
